NOTD: Purple Floral and Lace Nails

Whew, I can’t believe it’s been nearly a month since I last posted! I finally finished my last exams two weeks ago. I went to Vegas for a few days with some friends right after, and since then have been keeping myself busy catching up on errands and with friends. I’ve got a bunch of errands to run today, but I wanted to do a quick post on the nails I did yesterday – I looove my nails right now and can’t stop staring at them haha.

Nails!

My purple and white floral and lace nails!

The nail polishes I used: Maybelline Unbreakable White, Essie Play Date, OPI Here Today Aragon Tomorrow, Julep Viola, and Glitzology Crown Royal.

This was my first time trying to do floral nails and I have to say they are a lot easier to do than it looks! I just painted some blobs on with the brush and then used a sewing pin to wiggle on some leaves and some darker squiggles inside the blobs – voila! Flowers. I’m a little sad though – I put a thick coat of Seche Vite on to protect my design and what does it do but troll me and make my flowers bleed :( Oh well, next time I’ll wait longer before putting on top coat.  The lace nail stickers I got from a swap with Christine. I love how easy they were to apply – I’m going to need to ask her where she got them from!

Ok, off to run errands now! I’ve got a million and one things I want to post though so expect to hear from me again soon :)

NOTD: Mint and Silver Nails

Hi everyone! I’ve been pretty busy with classes lately so I haven’t had time to post (although I have many sitting on the docket), but I wanted to do a quick post to share the nails I did over the Easter weekend. I recently got Essie’s Mint Candy Apple, which I’ve been lemming for aaaages so I had to use it! Here’s what I came up with:

IMG_1131

My mint and silver nails!

I absolutely love how these turned out! I used the Essie Sleek Sticks stickers I got in the mail as well as the sheet I pulled out of my Flare magazine to do these. The sleek sticks were super easy to apply, and so far (today is day 3 of my mani) they’res still looking good with no tip wear! I did do a little experiment though and coated the sleek sticks on my left hand with top coat, and left the right hand without, and the side with top coat is holding up a lot better than the side that I didn’t put topcoat on. The silver has kind of rubbed off in some places on my right hand. I found that topcoat smoothed out the sticker too, which I prefer. So tip! Use topcoat when using these Sleek Sticks :)

I also used silver striping tape for the first time however, and that is looking pretty terrible right now with the tape peeling and coming up at the edges :/ You can kind of see it in the pictures.

Essie Beyond Cozy, Essie Mint Candy Apple, and Essie Sleek Sticks sample

The formula on both polishes was pretty good. I used 3 coats of both polishes, although you could probably get away with just two coats for both. I reaaally like Beyond Cozy, this is going to be my go to accent nail colour from now on. So sparkily! And it’s kind of got the texture of those liquid sand polishes that are becoming so popular right now.

Julep March Secret Store Purchases

I got home just a little while ago and found my secret store purchase waiting for me, so I wanted to do a quick post to share!

Love seeing this box on my doorstep!

Wish Upon a Charm: Gold Rush set

Wish Upon a Charm: Gold Rush set

I’ve been wanting Vivien and Oscar for a while now, so I was so happy to see that they came together in a set. I wish it had been Sienna instead of Felicity in this set though, I feel like Felicity is a tad too yellow.. we’ll see. I really like the bracelet too! It’s from an Etsy seller called She & Jack. I think it’ll look super cute stacked with a bunch of friendship bracelets, or just on its own.

Yumi

Yumi

I used the free polish code I got in my Cupid’s mystery box to pick up Yumi. This is one of the colours I’ve been regretting not picking up when I had the chance to, and was so excited to see it was back in stock. I expect to be using this very soon :)

ClubNailPolish Review

So today I came home to a mysterious silver bubble mailer package addressed to me with no return address on it…

?? Who could this be from?

?? Who could this be from?

The suspense was killing me! Who was this mystery package from?

The goodies inside! Cotton pads x 3, OPI You Don't Know Jacques (full size), and nail files x 3

Tada! The goodies inside! Cotton pads x 3, OPI You Don’t Know Jacques (full size), and nail files x 3

It was my Pretty Little Package from ClubNailPolish.com! This is their prototype for their monthly package, which they sent to me for review. ClubNailPolish.com is a new service and is a nail polish of the month club. It’s not meant to be like a beauty box type subscription, but something simpler, where they only send a full size bottle of a secret colour of brand name nail polish each month and you can cancel any time. Right now they’re only available in Canada, but the next step will be the US.

Their description of their service is

It’s like “Candy For Your Nails.” And as someone famous once said. “Life is like a box full of chocolates. You never know what one you’ll get” In this case, once a month. We are the last chocolate that you relish and savor.

I was so happy to get this in the mail! I love the sparkly silver envelope, such a happy surprise to be getting (rather than just bills and junk mail :p). My goodies were wrapped up in matching silver printed tissue paper too, which was a really cute touch. I’m actually really happy to be receiving this colour as well, so great choice on them! OPI’s You Don’t Know Jacques is one of those colours that seem ubiquitous, but I never got around to picking one up for myself. I remember it launching quite a few years ago, but since then it’s become one of the permanent colours. It’s a dark purpley greyish brown taupe, which doesn’t sound overly pretty, but if you google some swatches looks gorgeous on nails! I can’t wait to try this out. The cotton pads and nail files will certainly come in handy when I remove my current polish and reshape my nails to try this one out ;)

I think the idea behind ClubNailPolish is really cool being a “nail polish of the month club” where they send you the secret colour of the month from a name brand (ie. OPI, China Glaze, Essie, etc) rather than a big box of random beauty samples or inhouse products. Nice and simple. It’s perfect for nail polish junkies who just want a surprise polish each month without all the other products that come in existing beauty box services.

However, I really question the sustainability of the service. The bubble mailer shows that shipping cost $7.61 for the package – yikes! That’s just about how much each nail polish itself costs at retail price. Hopefully they can negotiate a cheaper shipping rate. I don’t think they’ve established a price for their monthly Pretty Little Packages yet, but it would have to be at least around $10 for them to just break even and at that price, unless they throw in some fun extras like maybe glitter pots or nail stickers (cotton pads and nail files are a useful addition, but I can’t imagine that people would want to be receiving them every month) I don’t think many people would be interested because you can pick up a polish from a salon or drugstore for around the same price.

That said, they haven’t launched yet and are just testing out their prototype package right now. I’m sure there’s lot’s of room for improvement and as a self professed nail polish junkie (and lover of all surprises – especially ones in pretty packages) I’m super excited for this to launch!

Juelp Maven February 2013 Bombshell Box

Ok, this is (really) late, but I still wanted to show you all my February Maven box because it’s the first box I’ve actually not skipped since the summer – it was just too irresistible!

Bombshell box

Julep Maven February Bombshell box! From left to right is an eyelash curler, Laura, Ginger, Oxygen Nail Treatment, and Freedom Top Coat.

This month’s box came packed with goodies! The product included in each box was the new Oxygen Nail Treatment, and every box got the new Freedom Top Coat as a extra goodie, so I knew I couldn’t pass this month up! They also sent an eyelash curler as a bonus gift, which was totally unexpected but very much appreciated. Missing in the above picture are also two chocolate hearts, which were promptly devoured upon me opening the box so they didn’t make it into the picture… :p

The inside of the box

The Oxygen Nail Treatment and Freedom Top Coat both came inside boxes. I thought having their motto “Shine on.” on the inside of the top flap was the cutest thing.

I guess the good part about me waiting so long to post is that I have had a chance to try most of the polishes in the box. Here are some pics of Ginger, Freedom Top Coat, and the Oxygen Nail Treatment in action.

Julep Ginger

Julep Ginger topped with Julep Freedom Top Coat in natural light

I absolutely LOVE Ginger! It’s such a gorgeous colour, and it’s my first holographic, which is kind of exciting (for me anyways ha). The picture does not do this colour justice at all, it’s the most beautiful understated colour that shifts from a sandy beige to a purpley taupe colour depending on the light, and always full of sparkly holo goodness, especially in natural sunlight. I’m definitely going to be using this colour all the time in the summer once the sun is out.

As for the Freedom Top Coat, I’m somewhat indifferent. The instructions said to cure it under light for 5 minutes, and it definitely did dry within those 5 minutes to a shiny, hard finish. However I don’t think it was anything particularly special. It prevented my polish from chipping for about 4 days, so nothing special there either. Personally I still prefer Seche Vite, but I really do appreciate how Julep’s Freedom Top Coat is 4 free so I will switch to using it once my bottle of Seche Vite runs out.

Julep Oxygen Nail Treatment in natural light

Julep Oxygen Nail Treatment in natural light

I really like Julep’s Oxygen Nail Treatment! It promises to increase oxygen flow to nails and improve them. The picture above is one coat. It dried super fast, super hard, and super shiny on my nails. I’ve tried it twice now, the first time only for three days, and am currently wearing it now and planning to keep it on for another few days to make this time’s trial one week long. I found that the first time I used it, while I was wearing the treatment my nails felt really strong, but after taking them off I’m not sure if I noticed too much of a difference. But since I’m using it for longer this time maybe the treatment will be more effective.

I’m really happy I took this box! This month was also my one year anniversary as a Maven, so I got an extra 300 points, which was very much appreciated :)

Glitzology Order and NOTD: Glitzology Boy Girl Party over Nicole Play Fair

Nail mail is the best type of mail

Nail mail is the best type of mail

So a few weeks ago after getting my first Glitzology order (and loving it) I knew I needed more glittery goodness so I made a second order and received it yesterday.  Here’s what I picked up this time:

Crown Royal, Rhinestone Jumpsuit, Cupid's Arrow, and Boy Girl Party

It took a bit longer this time to get my polishes but the wait was worth it! Right away I did my nails with Boy Girl Party, which is the one I was most excited to receive.

Glitzology Boy Girl Party over Nicole Play Fair

Application was kinda tricky because it’s such a densely packed glitter but I really liked the end result! I love all the random shapes of the blue glitters coupled with the pink hexes and white bars.  The picture doesn’t do this polish justice!

If you’re interested, I think she has a 50% off sale on her polishes going on right now if you use the code “SINGLEANDHAPPY” :)

Which indie polishes would you recommend?

Julep Valentines Mystery Box

So the doorbell rang a little while ago and I bolted to the door right away hoping it was my mailman with my Julep Mystery Box – and it was! I feel like I’ve been waiting for aaaggeeesss for this box and have been super antsy to receive it.

010

Yay!

I opened it up right away and immediately knew I had lucked out when the first thing I saw wasn’t nail polish but product…

Is that pink grapefruit body frosting I see?

Is that pink grapefruit body frosting and everday SPF I see?

Sure enough, I dug around and here’s the amazing mystery box I received!

Woohoo!

Woohoo! This is Box 8

Blah

The polishes I received!

I’m so happy with the box I received! I paid $19.99 for this box (actually less, more like around $10 because I used a Bloomspot voucher that gave me a $50 Julep gift card for $20) and in return got 8 polishes ($11.20 x 8), a voucher for a polish of my choice ($11.20), Julep Everyday SPF ($22.40), Julep Topcoat for Hair ($12.80), and Julep Pink Grapefruit Body Frosting ($14.40) for a total value of about $150 using Maven pricing. The best part is that none of the nail polish colours are dupes for me, and I’m actually in need of a new base coat so this couldn’t have come at a better time!

If you’re interested in becoming a Julep Maven they offer your first box for free if you use the promo code “FREEBOX” when you take a style quiz here and sign up for your intro Maven box! If you do sign up I’d be super happy if you used my referral code: 1668128 ♥

Did you buy a mystery box? What did you get?

Glitzology Order and NOTD: Glitzology Cruella and Julep Susie

So a few weeks ago I made an order from Glitzology’s Etsy shop (looove everything in there) when she was doing a 50% off promo and got the package a few days ago.  It’s my first indie polish order – I love how glittery they are! I ordered 4 mini’s (5mL) with shipping for around $10 and have been itching to use them ever since I placed the order!

Glitzology "Nebula", "Cotton Candy", "Blue Lagoon", and "Cruella"

Here's another shot of them from the back in the same order so you can see how gorgeous and glittery they are!

Here’s another shot of them from the back in the same order so you can see how gorgeous and glittery they are!

Anyways, I made a new years resolution this year to try to do my nails once a week to start getting through my ever-surmounting pile of nail polish, so here’s what I did today (I’ve got a bunch from the last few Friday’s of this month, I’ll get around to posting them soon!):

Nails using Glitzology "Cruella" and Juelp "Susie"

Nails using Glitzology “Cruella” and Juelp “Susie”

Cruella was the one I’d been wanting to try the most because of how similar it looks to Lynderella’s “Connect the Dots”, which I’ve always wanted but could never justify buying.  I really love the way this looks on top of Julep’s “Susie”!  I used 2 coats of Susie and one coat of Cruella, followed by a coat of Seche Vite.  Love the way this turned out!

I’m really loving indie polishes right now and thinking to add more to my collection, especially since Glitzology is having another 50% off promo… But I’ll try to resist (at least until I get through all of these!)

What are your favourite indie polishes?

Topbox December 2012 Review

So I got my long awaited Topbox in the mail today. It’s sort of got a festive theme, using red instead of their usual white and purple tube.  Not going to lie though, pretty disappointed with this box. This is my third one and I think I’m going to cancel this subscription, simply because I don’t think it’s worth it. At $12 it’s relatively inexpensive, but none of the samples I’ve been getting in my boxes are all that exciting..  Anyways, here’s my box:

Box #33

Box #33

From left to right:

Chloe Eau de Parfum – 5mL ($9) I would be stoked to receive this sample if it weren’t for the fact that I already have 3 of these… I feel like Chloe is pushing its samples hard everywhere because I keep getting them for free, which would be fine except I absolutely can’t stand the smell.  It smells like something a grandma would wear to me.. I’ll probably pass this off to my mom.

China Glaze “Exotic Encounters” from the On Safari Collection – 14mL ($10) I’m always happy to get nail polish so this is great.  Not something I would have picked for myself, but I guess that’s a good thing.  I’ve been on a nail polish buying spree lately and this isn’t the most exciting colour (I am on a mega sparkle kick right now) so I probably won’t be using this anytime soon, but will eventually.

Ferro Cosmetics Ultimate HD Foundation – 1 g? ($2.50) I’m totally guesstimating the amount in the container since it doesn’t say but it’s actually quite a bit of powder in there so it should last for a while since you don’t need to use very much.  I’m happy with my Bare Minerals but I will try this out eventually.  I really like the fact that it’s paraben free and cruelty free though!

Goldwell Jelly Boost – 30mL ($3.79) Apparently this is a spray gel.  I honestly do not think I will ever use this because.. well who uses gel in their hair?  Actually I stand corrected, my sister is a cadet and has to use buckets of gel in her hair when she goes to events so I guess I’ll be passing this on to her.  But seriously, what girl uses gel in her hair on an everyday basis?

All in all the “value” of this box is about $25, which is more than I paid, but I’m really not liking this sub.  I waited for months and months to get off the waitlist so there’s that emotional attachment (irrational I know), but so far I’ve been thoroughly disappointed by each box.  The brands aren’t as high end as they used to be, and the sample sizes aren’t overly impressive. I think I’m going to stick around for the January box because they’re introducing some sort of fancy shmancy “Prive” box that features some yet to be known but supposedly “iconic” brand.. Hopefully it’s good, because unless it’s mindblasting, sadly I’m going to be ending my subscription.  I haven’t even posted the other 2 boxes because of how unexciting they were.. but now that I’m on winter break maybe I’ll get around to posting them :)

Loose Button: Fall 2012 Luxe Box Unboxing

Hello my pretties.  So I finally received my fall Luxe Box!  I literally bolted to the door when I heard the postman ring the doorbell.  I skipped Julep Maven this month so I’ve been suuuuper antsy waiting for this box (I love getting goodies in the mail), especially since I haven’t gotten one for a few months since they switched it from monthly to quarterly.  Ok, straight to the pictures!

Oooh, the box is a different shape than the old boxes.

Unboxing the box, we find a second box. This one is super gorgeous. Heavy white paperboard with a little gold Loose Button logo. This box is a huge improvement over the old Luxe Boxes, which were made with flimsy card paper and pretty much useless because they were too small to store anything.

A little envelope sits on top of the contents which were wrapped in a little satiny square of white cloth.

So pretty! The other side of the envelope is sealed with a monogrammed gold foil sticker. I suuuuper cautiously peeled it so I wouldn’t wreck the sticker (even though I’ll probably end up tossing the envelope in the recycling in a few days :p)

The envelope had a card inside that lists everything in the fall Luxe Box.

So many goodies inside!

Everything inside all laid out! I’ll post the samples in order of what I’m most excited about receiving to least excited about.

Marcelle BB Cream (full size!). I was soo happy when I saw this sample! It’s perfect because I’ve been meaning to buy one. I was using Estee Lauder’s BB cream before but it’s so pricy, so it was awesome seeing this in my box! I tried it and already love it.

Benefit Stay Don’t Stray eyeshadow primer. Yay, more stuff that I’ve been meaning to buy! I’ve been wanting an eyeshadow primer. I tried this right away too, and love it too. It’s a small sample but I feel like it’ll last a long time because you only need to use a tiny tiny bit each time.

KMS Free Shape Quick Blow Dry. So excited to use this! I have really long hair so I hate blow drying because it takes foreevvvveerrrr. I really hope this works because if it does I’m definitely stocking up on it. I am the worst at waking up on time so anything that helps me save time in the morning is awesome in my books.  It’s a really good sized sample too that should last quite a while.

Vichy Proeven Daily Dark Spot Corrector (x6).  These came out of one of the brown card pouches.  Okay, the packaging is pretty cheapy looking because I feel like I could get these little packets from any drugstore, but at least they included six of them so they should last for a couple of weeks. I have tons of freckles on my face I’d love to get rid of so I hope these work!

China Glaze On Safari (Fall collection) Nail Laquer in “Adventure Red-y” (full size). I love nail polish, but I really have too much of it so I wasn’t super stoked to see this in my box. The colour is kind of cool though, I have tons of reds but this one is a darker vampy shade of red, a bit darker than in the picture. I’ll get around to using it eventually.

Loose Button Exfoliating Pad. This came out of the other little brown card pouch. The other side has an elastic attached so it stays on your hand. This seems like a pretty lame excuse for a “sample” but I am in need of a new loofah type thing so at least this will come in handy. But really, this is a pretty lame sample.

Prada Amber Pour Homme. This sample I’m least excited about because it’s not for me haha. I took the opportunity to swap out the perfume sample I would have gotten for a men’s cologne because I have way too much perfume already and in the past, the perfume samples Luxe Box sent me were the tiny sample vials you can easily pick up at any department store. This is a pretty good sized cologne and the bottle is super cute! (I am a sucker for cute minis). Too bad it’s going to my boyfriend.

All in all, I’m pretty happy with this box!  The packaging is absolutely gorgeous, and it definitely lives up to its name of being a very luxe box.  The full size BB cream is definitely what made this box for me, because that alone is worth $23.  I do think that the fact that a house brand exfoliating pad was considered a sample is pretty disappointing however.  The box promised to come with 7-8 samples, and I feel like including the pad as the seventh sample was a pretty lame move.  Still, overall the value is definitely there since I’m paying only $14 a box because I bought a Buytopia deal and there are a lot of samples I’m really excited to try out.

Super excited to receive the next one!  (Too bad it doesn’t come for another 3 months – sob).
