Nail Friday: Valentines Day Nails & Julep Maven February Bombshell Unboxing

Happy Valentines Day everyone! Today I wanted to share the Valentine’s Day themed nails I did last night, as well as my February Julep Maven Bombshell box, which I used to do my nails :)

Valentines Day themed nails

Here’s what I came up with! I used Seche Vite though and there is already major shrinkage :(

Julep Maven

Julep Maven

So this month (and last actually) I forgot to skip my box, so I didn’t actually choose what I wanted. It was fun to get, but gah, $19.99..!

A quick look inside

A quick look inside

This month’s theme was “the Dramatic Collection”

Oooh, so many goodies!

Oooh, so many goodies!

As always the packaging was themed and super cute! It’s always fun opening these boxes. In addition to the usual two polishes and one product, the extra this month was a new colour called “Love”.

Julep Maven February Bombshell Box

Julep Maven February Bombshell Box

My default option is “Bombshell” from the quiz I took when I signed up way back then, and thankfully the colours I got I like quite a bit! Kristen, the blue is described as “deep sea teal with silver microshimmer” and is super pretty! Judi, the purple, is described as “English violet crème.” It’s a bit too similar to what I already own though, so I’ll be trying to swap that soon. Love is gorgeous! It’s described as “gold, pearl & fuchsia microglitter” and is super unique.

Julep Kristen, Julep Judi, and Julep Love

A look at the polishes outside of the boxes. I don’t know why Julep is using boxes now for the polishes. It seems like a waste of packaging if you ask me, but I guess it makes them more “giftable.”

Julep Eye Sheen Liquid Shadow in Warm Fig Shimmer

Julep Eye Sheen Liquid Shadow in Warm Fig Shimmer

I kinda wish Julep sent a more neutral colour as the default for people who didn’t pick what colour eye sheen they wanted this month. Dark purple tends to make my eyes look a bit bruised, but luckily this one doesn’t! I love how it can be as pigmented or as sheer as you want depending on how much you put on and blend out. I tried to swatch this but my swatches looked nothing like the actual colour, which is a warm brownish purple. I guess I’m kind of glad I didn’t pick, since I would have probably opted for a champagney-taupe colour that I always default to and have a million of. This is definitely different from other colours in my collection!

I loved the look of Love in the bottle, so I knew I wanted to use it for my nails, and figured why not go a step further by literally having “love” on my nails :p I love the fushia microglitter in the gold shimmer base! So fun.

Nail Friday: Valentines Day Nails & Julep Maven February Bombshell Unboxing

Wet Seal red glitter polish, Julep Myrtle, Julep Love, Revlon Blackest Black

Here’s a pic of the colours I used for my nails.

Also, since it’s Valentine’s day here’s some pictures of what I spent my morning doing. I put my domestic goddess hat on (that’s a joke, I’d be an awful wifey) and did my best to make some magic in the kitchen (to varying degrees of success) so I could surprise my boyfriend and family with some treats. Here’s what I ended up with:

Peanut butter pie

Peanut butter pie

I AM SO EXCITED TO EAT THIS! I used a recipe from Skinny Taste and tasted the batter – soo good. I wish I made a third pie just so I could hide it away just for me haha.

Flourless peanut butter cookies

Flourless peanut butter cookies

I used a recipe from the Food Network for these. It was super easy, only five ingredients, but I think they turned out too sweet :(

Chocolate covered strawberries

Chocolate covered strawberries

And finally I made a big batch of chocolate covered strawberries. They’re kinda healthy right? That’s what I’ll be telling myself as I stuff my face with them anyways.. Ha.

Are you doing anything special for Valentines Day?

Wantable May 2013 Makeup Box Unboxing and Review!

So my mailman came just now and dropped off my eagerly awaited Wantable box!  A few months ago Wantable announced they were going to start scaling up their service and offering their subscription boxes to Canadians, having previously only been shipping boxes within the US. The best part: the first 1000 to sign up would get theirs free! So of course I rushed to sign up.

Right now there are a million and one subscription boxes on the market I feel like, but I think Wantable’s done a great job of differentiating themselves by offering something different: a box of full sized products (not samples!) that are completely catered to your tastes. They offer a jewelry box and a makeup box and being indecisive, I went for both (ha). I haven’t gotten my jewelry box yet (and honestly am kinda nervous to get it based on the boxes I’ve seen so far), but here’s my unboxing of my makeup box!

When you sign up you go through a pretty comprehensive quiz of the types of products you love, like, and dislike, and more questions on the specific colours/types of products that you like/dislike. The only thing I disliked was blush, and based on my quiz, I think they did a pretty good job at curating my box! Ok, without further ado, here’s a whackload of pictures taken while I unboxed my makeup box:

The box

The box. It’s pretty cute looking. The cardboard is coated, which gives it some sheen and makes it look a little classier. It’s a pretty good size too – I think this would fit into an apartment mailbox for all of you condo dwellers.

A quick look at what i got! Besame Sweetheart Balm, Face Highlighter, Face Mascara, and Mia BelleZZa Eye Crayon. The products are safely packaged in a layer of bubble wrap under the tissue paper

A quick look at everything inside the black tissue paper! Besame Sweetheart Balm, FACE Highlighter, FACE Mascara, and MiA BelleZZa Eye Crayon. The products are safely packaged in a layer of bubble wrap under the tissue paper.

Besame Sweetheart Balm in Tangerine ($18)

Besame Sweetheart Balm in Tangerine ($18)

From the product sheet: “My Sweetheart Balm is a luminous lip moisturizing balm with a hint of colour that gives you an elegant, long lasting finish. I carefully crafted a healthy formula that deeply moisturizes and conditions, while fortifying with antioxidant vitamins C and E. It is highly emollient and protective as it drenches the lips with exceptional comfort and hydration in sheer, shiny pops of colour.”

This is my favourite from everything I received. The packaging is super super cute and looks vintagey and gorgeous. The lipbalm itself is great too, it looks like a gloss applied, but is thinner and completely unsticky. It’s super moisturizing, and it adds a bit of sheer colour and shine. The scent is great too – oranges are my favourite fruit.

FACE Stockholm Cream Highlighter in Dignity ($25)

FACE Stockholm Cream Highlighter in Dignity ($25)

From FACE: “Wear alone, over foundation or to add a lightness to tired eyes and under circles.”

I’m really happy to be receiving this too! I’ve been looking for a highlighter, so this is great to receive. I think I listed highlighter as a “love” on my quiz. I’ve never heard of this brand, but I swatched it (pics at end) and it’s super creamy and shimmery.

FACE Stockholm Volumizing Mascara in Black ($24)

FACE Stockholm Volumizing Mascara in Black ($24)

From FACE: “Our classic formula – create captivating eyes with just one coat.”

Mascara is my favourite beauty product, so I’m always happy to get another. I’ve got a million tubes to get through though, so I don’t want to open this one up and try it out.

MiA BelleZZa Summer Love Eye Crayon in Argento ($17.99)

MiA BelleZZa Summer Love Eye Crayon in Argento ($17.99)

From MiA BelleZZa: “Beautiful shadow crayons for easy application of rich creamy colour in a single sweep. With skin soothing Squalene, vitamins C & E your lids will be moisturized while providing antioxidant protection.”

Hm, not so happy to be receiving this. I didn’t “love” eyeshadow on my quiz, and asked for a neutral shimmer if I was to get an eyeshadow. I guess pink can be seen as neutral. I tried it out though and it was great being applied – super smooth and creamy with no tugging, but after only 10 minutes it settled into the creases of my eyelids. Hopefully it’ll be better with primer. By the way – not to be nitpicky, but I lol’d at the name of this brand. I’ve never heard of it before, but the name reminds me of the way I used to type back when I was 12 and just starting using MSN Messenger (“wUtz uP?!”).

Frownies Eye Gels ($0)

Frownies Eye Gels ($0)

Last, but not.. actually, yes, least,

From Frownies: “Anti-wrinkle treatment for puffy bags under the eyes contains powerful anti-oxidants that help protect your skin. With one 30 minute anti-aging treatment 100% of women testing Frownies eye gels saw a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and dark circles. The weight of the anti-wrinkle patch smooths the under eye area and protects the integrity of the acid mantle and skin. Frownies Eye Gels promote beauty and provide antioxidants to fight free radical damage. Natural ingredients help improve the appearance of the skin.”

Interesting concept, but I don’t think I’m really in the target demographic for this product. I think these will come in handy come recruiting season in the fall or finals season when my eye bags are panda-esque though.

Wantable May 2013 Makeup Box

Wantable May 2013 Makeup Box

Overall I’m pleased with this box. The total retail value of the box was $85. The subscription costs $36, plus around $9 for shipping, taxes, and duties. With the first box free I’ll be getting the $36 credited back. For what I paid, it was definitely worth it, but going forward I’m not sure if it’s worth it. $45 is quite a bit to be hiking out for mystery products, but the customization aspect is great. I think to get a great box though you’d need to be very very picky in exactly what you wanted and didn’t want to receive. In hindsight, I think I would have been happier with my box if I’d listed exactly what I wanted, rather than listing that I liked almost everything.

I’m a little upset that I only received 4 items however (I’m not going to count the Frownies sample, since even on the itemized invoice it lists the value at $0) – I’ve seen a lot of lucky ladies get 6 full sized products. But again, for what I’ve paid I really can’t complain. The customized aspect means that I will definitely use everything I got, and going forward if I did continue to subscribe I’d be a lot more picky with what I loved and disliked to make sure I loved the box I got.

If you’re interested in signing up, Wantable is available in the US and Canada and costs $36 a month for 4-6 full sized products. I’d love it if you signed up by clicking my referral link here.

Did you sign up? Leave me a link to your box if you did!

Julep May 2013: The Full Shebang Upgrade Unboxing

Oooh, I’ve been itching to get this box ever since the maven selection window opened. I loved everything this month, and for the first time had to go for the full upgrade. This month’s theme for Julep was “Set the Stage” and was 1920s flapper themed, probably to coincide with the release of the Great Gatsby (which I really really want to watch!). Well after waiting for what felt like forever, I finally got it in the mail yesterday. Here’s what I got:

Yay! I feel like I've been waiting for this box for ages

This month was really makeup heavy, and included Julep’s American Beauty Volumizing Mascara

Julep's May 2013 Full Upgrade Box

Everything in all it’s glory: Julep’s May 2013 Full Upgrade Box

So many goodies this month! Normally I skip or just go for one of the profile boxes, but I couldn’t resist treating myself and getting everything for May since at the time I was just about to finish writing all of my final exams. A girl’s gotta treat herself right? Anyways I haven’t tried anything out yet, but will post reviews when I do!

Topbox May 2013 “February Favourites” Unboxing

I am seriously loving how quick Topbox is getting their boxes out now – it seems like they’re really on top of things lately where I’ve been getting my boxes on the 10th, rather than just the shipping notice and having to wait another week for it to get to me from the East coast.

So for May we had the choice of a slew of different boxes, and at first I picked the February Favourites box, hoping for a chance to get the Deborah Lippmann polish in Ray of Light (it was that, or Since I Fell For You) because I was super jealous of everyone who opted for the regular box back in February. But a few weeks ago Topbox sent out an email offering to let anyone who chose the February box  to opt out, and I got cold feet so I decided to not get it anymore and clicked the link they provided in the email. So of course I was rather surprised when I opened up my tube today and got it.

Yay, I'm loving how fast this comes every month.

Another look at the MUFE foundation

Overall, this is a great box with a really high value – altogether it’s worth about $79. However, I can’t help but feel a little annoyed that I got the box I opted out of receiving… Especially since I got the very nail polish that I didn’t want in the first place! The MUFE foundation is too dark for me as well, but maybe I can use it as a bronzer. I haven’t tried anything yet though and am going to email to see if there’s any chance I can exchange this for a regular box, which actually looked pretty good this month. Fingers crossed they’ll let me!

Which box did you get this month?

UPDATE: I emailed Topbox on Friday night to ask if I could return my box in exchange for the regular box, and this morning at 8am they got back to me and said they would send me the regular box to make up for their mistake! Yay! Super quick response and great customer service. I was thinking about cancelling my subscription but I think I will stay for a while longer since they were so great about fixing this.

Beauty Box 5 March 2013 Unboxing

A few days ago my postman greeted me with my Beauty Box 5! Yay, I actually love getting this box, it’s quickly become one of my favourites. This month took forever it felt to ship, so hopefully that doesn’t keep up. But I was really happy with the contents! Here’s what I got:

Hooray!

Hooray!

A quick look at everything inside

Here’s everything I got in order of what I was most to least excited about:

Tree Hut Body Butter - 60mL ($1.44)

Tree Hut Body Butter in Tropical Mango – 60mL ($1.44)

OH. MY. GAWRD. This smells so amazing. A big reason why I am really liking BB5 is because they always introduce me to new brands I’ve never tried. Although they included Tree Hut last month, I’m so happy they included them again because this is a brand I am absolutely loving right now, everything they make smells amazeballs! Seriously, I keep opening the jar just to smell it. I NEED to find out where this brand is sold in Canada!

Brazen Cosmetics Eyeshadow in Buzzed - 3g ($4.25)

Brazen Cosmetics Eyeshadow in Buzzed – 3g ($4.25)

Makeup!! So exciting. I feel like lately all my subscriptions keep sending me lotion, after cream, after shampoo, without any actual makeup. I tried this out and the pigmentation is really great. The colour is a dark brown with a really fine gold shimmer – so pretty! Unfortunately it’s exclusive to BB5 if you wanted to buy this. I really like how BB5 (intentionally?) tends to send out mostly organic/natural samples like this one. Especially around the eye area, I want to know that what I’m putting on is safe!

H2O Plus Spa Sea Salt Body Wash - 30mL ($1.36)

H2O Plus Spa Sea Salt Body Wash – 30mL ($1.36)

We got a shampoo from H2O last month, but I’m happy to be seeing them again as well! This body wash smells super fresh and clean and really wakes me up in the morning. The sea salt in this is supposed to draw out impurities in your skin and replenish essential nutrients. I’ve used it a few times now and so far I’m liking it!

H2O Plus Eyelift Concentrate - 4mL ($9.88)

H2O Plus Eyelift Concentrate – 4mL ($9.88)

Eye cream is so expensive, so I’m glad to be getting a sample of this. 4mL should go a long long way since the typical full size eye cream is usually 15mL. This promises to be like “bottled sleep” – sounds good to me!

LA Fresh Nail Polish Remover Wipes - 2 ($1.33)

LA Fresh Nail Polish Remover Wipes – 2 ($1.33)

And finally, we have nail polish remover wipes from LA Fresh. This is nothing too exciting, but is definitely super practical to have on hand. I’ll try them out and see how they compare to the wipes I’ve been using from Julep.

Beauty Box 5 March 2013

Another great month from BB5! This really is my favourite box I think right now. The total value of this box was $18.26, and with my yearly sub I’m paying around $8 per box.

Oh and also! Last month the brush compact they sent was broken in my box, so I emailed them. They replied super quick, and told me they didn’t have any more, but that they would send me something extra to make up for it. Here’s what they sent:

Rosebud Salve & Pediscrub

Smith’s Rosebud Salve & Pedi-Scrub Foot Buffer

I’m so happy! This went above and beyond my expectations, I was expecting some small extra but they sent it out I think immediately after our email correspondence because it came a week before my box did. The Rosebud Salve they sent was full size. How awesome is that? I’m so happy with their customer service!

If you’re interested in signing up (DO IT!!), go for their annual sub, which works out to only $8.33 a month! You can sign up by clicking here.

Thanks for reading! What did you think of the box?

Topbox April 2013 Regular Box Unboxing

Woohoo! I am loving that Topbox is shipping from Vancouver now. It was sent out yesterday and I just received it. This month’s Prive options were Elizabeth Arden and Aveda, which both did not appeal to me so I opted for a regular box. Here’s what I got:

Oooh, what could be inside?

Oooh, what could be inside?

Topbox April 2013 - KMS Quick Blow Dry, Elizabeth Arden Makeup Remover, Michael Todd Jojoba Facial Scrub, Boxx Cosmetics Travel Foundation Brush

Topbox April 2013 – KMS Quick Blow Dry, Elizabeth Arden Makeup Remover, Michael Todd Jojoba Facial Scrub, Boxx Cosmetics Travel Foundation Brush

KMS California Freeshape Quick Blow Dry – 30mL ($2.81) Aw man, this is a dupe for me. I got this in my December box I believe. I didn’t particularly like it as I don’t feel like it made any difference in how long it took me to dry my hair.

Elizabeth Arden All Gone Eye and Lip Makeup Remover – 50mL ($12) Hm, this isn’t overly exciting. The reason I didn’t pick the Elizabeth Arden prive box was because of the fact that makeup remover was one of the products that I didn’t want to be receiving more of, because I already have so many sample bottles from various boxes and GWPs. I guess it’ll be nice to try out eventually though, I’ve never used this before.

Michael Todd True Organics Jojoba Charcoal Facial Scrub – 30mL ($5.40) I’m happy to be receiving this! The full size is only 100mL, so this is a pretty generously sized sample. I’ve never tried a charcoal mask/face wash but have always wanted to so this will definitely be used soon!

Boxx Cosmetics Travel Size Foundation Brush – Full Size ($28) Wow, I can’t believe this brush retails for so much! I already have a foundation brush, but I’ll try this one out to see how it compares.

Total value: $48.21

Overall, I’m glad I chose the regular box over the Prive boxes. There’s something just so fun about getting surprises in the mail. I’m a little annoyed that I’m getting a dupe though, since Topbox promises to never send duplicates so I will be emailing about that.

What did you get in yours?

UPDATE: Rats, I realized that I got the KMS in my Winter Luxe Box, not Topbox. Oh well!

Aw, what a let down! Wish I had gotten the Mereadesso Lip Treats or the Morocannoil Body Buff :( I don’t like seeing all the awesome samples I could have received…

Here’s what I got, in order of what I was most excited to least excited to receive:

L'Occitane Hand Cream - 10mL ($4)

L’Occitane Hand Cream – 10mL ($4)

I LOVE this hand cream. It’s definitely an HG product for me, so another one is always great to have, although I wish I had gotten this in a different scent. Still, happy to be receiving it. This has already gone into my purse.

Marni Perfume - 7mL ($13.46)

Marni Perfume – 7mL ($13.46)

I was really excited to be receiving this – I love getting cute mini bottles of perfume, and this one has been fairly hyped up lately since it’s Marni’s first foray into fragrance if I’m not mistaken. I tried it on… And I don’t know if I really like it. Maybe it’ll grow on me. I think they tried a little too hard to make this perfume unique by not using any of the normal scents in perfume (ie. floral, citrusy, sweet scents).. to the point where it smells more like a men’s cologne than a perfume for women. It’s a warm spicy scent – think cinnamon, cardamom, and patchouli. Hm, I don’t know, I’ve thrown this into my stash but I can’t see myself reaching for this until the fall.

Loose Button Blender Sponge - One size ($2?)

Loose Button Blender Sponge – One size ($2?)

I’ve never tried a blending sponge before, so I was pretty excited to be receiving one. I’ve used it for the last few days and really like it! My boyfriend noticed that my skin looked more “smooth” so this gets my approval. The only thing is that after washing it the last few days it’s already gotten some cuts from my nails I guess when I squeeze out the water, so not good. But these things are so cheap to buy anyways, not a big loss I guess. Oh, and also I find I use a lot more foundation when using this product, even when I do the soak it in water and squeeze out the excess thing, which kinda sucks.

Smashbox Photo Finish Under Eye Primer - 1.5mL x 4 ($19.39)

Smashbox Photo Finish Under Eye Primer – 1.5mL x 4 ($19.39)

I thought this was an interesting concept… The description makes it sound almost like a substitute for an undereye concealer, which is great because finals are coming up meaning I will have the worst eyebags ever haha. I tried it out on its own and can’t say I’m overly impressed… It’s got a slightly shimmery finish, but it didn’t do much to brighten the under eye area. Maybe it’ll make my concealer hold up better if I use it as a primer (I guess that is what it’s meant for :p). But rant: I hate getting foil samples! So annoying. And I know that this definitely comes in a tube sample because I’ve seen it being offered elsewhere in a 5mL tube.

Blue Lagoon Rich Nourishing Cream - 2mL ($8.67) & Blue Lagoon Silica Mud Mask - 30mL ($15.00)

Blue Lagoon Rich Nourishing Cream – 2mL ($8.67) & Blue Lagoon Silica Mud Mask – 30mL ($15.00)

Hm, skincare. I have a Luxe box filled to the brim with skincare samples that I will probably never get through, so I’m not overly excited to be receiving another FOIL sample of face cream. The mud mask I’m really excited to use though!

Kerestase Reflection Bain Chroma Captive - 30mL ($4.68)

Kerestase Reflection Bain Chroma Captive – 30mL ($4.68)

It’s hard to get excited about shampoo. But I’m glad it’s a decently sized sample that should last me 4-5 showers, and it’s such a pricy product I would normally never buy. My hair is coloured, so this will be nice to try out.

Lancome Genefique - 8mL ($25.33)

Lancome Genefique – 8mL ($25.33)

And finally, there’s more skin care. This is a super generously sized sample that’s worth a lot, but I swear this comes in every single Lancome GWP, so I’ve already got a few little bottles of this in my stash. Still, I guess I’ve got enough to add up to being a full sized bottle now so I can try using them all up consecutively to see how effective it is. Not that I’m expecting much, anti-aging ins’t really on my list of priorities right now :p

Spring 2013 Luxe Box: Blue Lagoon Silica Mud Mask, Blue Lagoon Rich Nourishing Cream, Marni Perfume, Smashbox Photo Finish Under Eye Primer, Kerestase Bain Chroma Captive, L'Occitane Hand Cream, and Lancome Genefique

Spring 2013 Luxe Box: Blue Lagoon Silica Mud Mask, Blue Lagoon Rich Nourishing Cream, Marni Perfume, Smashbox Photo Finish Under Eye Primer, Kerestase Bain Chroma Captive, L’Occitane Hand Cream, and Lancome Genefique

Well, there you have it! My spring Luxe Box, with a total value of approximately $93. I’m happy with this box, although I’ve definitely seen much better ones out there. I’m a little upset I didn’ t receive anything at all that was full sized, versus seeing others who got multiple full sized products. Also, I really wish there hand been more makeup products in my box. I feel like I’m swimming in lotions, creams, and serums!

I signed up for a yearly subscription back when they first started the seasonal program, so I’ve still got a few more boxes left. I just realized I don’t think I’ve posted pictures of my Winter box yet, which I actually really did like, so I will probably get around to doing that soon.

What did you think about yours?

Love the inside flap of the hand creme box! This always makes me smile opening boxes of Julep product :)

The hand creme has a twist stopper, which is pretty unique. The scent is a typical sweet floral. I like the feel of it, it absorbed pretty quickly and left my hands moisturized.

Strawberry Mint Lip Blam

I LOOOVE this lip balm. This was a surprise extra they threw in for March. It smells and tastes so delicious. And I love the texture. It’s a bit more soft and greasy feeling compared to their vanilla mint lip balm, but I love it. This isn’t up on the website yet, but it sounds like it will be up on the secret store in April – I think I might need to order a backup.

Julep Maven’s March 2013 Boho Glam box

Well, there you have it! This is Julep’s March Boho Glam box. I’m really happy with this box, the colours look so much prettier in person than they do in the swatches Julep had. Just 2 more sleeps away from the April selection window!! Can’t wait.

Beauty Box 5: February 2013 Review

So after a (loooong) wait, I finally got my Beauty Box 5 box in the mail yesterday! This is my second BB5, and I was suuuuper antsy to receive it because it shipped late this month, but they emailed stating that the reason it was taking longer to ship was because they were sending bigger and heavier samples this month, and had to switch shipping providers. I think it’s great they were quick to communicate the delay to their subscribers, and heck for bigger samples I’d be willing to wait a little longer every month :p

Hooray! Finally here after it's long journey from Austin.

Tree Hut Shea Sugar Body Scrub – 5.5oz ($2.29)

Oh. My. Goodness. This smells amazeballs. I seriously cannot wait to take a shower and try this out, the smell is absolutely heavenly. The scent is super strong but I love it, it smells just like the tropics and summer. The size is super generous too, this sample will last for ages! I’m pretty sure I”m going to end up buying the full size once I’m done if I can find it because it’s super affordable and absolutely gigantic ($7.49 for 18oz).

H2O

H2O Plus Bath Aquatics Shampoo – 37mL ($2.06)

I haven’t tried this yet, but I am pretty excited to. I opened it up and it smells really good – super fresh and clean. The description says it’s “an exra-gentle daily shampoo fortified with watercress, Iceland moss and seaweed” – sounds good to me! There’s an H2O store downtown that I’ve walked by a million times but have never gone in and bought anything, so I’m really curious to see how their products are.

Coolway

Coolway Boost – 30mL ($4.99)

I’m excited to receive this product, if only because the full size is so pricy I would probably never buy it. The concept of Coolway products is really interesting – they claim that by using this it’ll allow you to style your hair using low heat, which avoids all the damage caused by heat styling.

Brush guards

The Brush Guard Variety Pack – 3 guards ($4.13)

This is another neat product that I’m glad to be receiving because I probably wouldn’t buy it for myself. The brush guards are meant to be put on your brush after washing, to help them retain their shape while drying standing bristles down, or to keep them clean when travelling. I think it’s a great idea, because by drying them bristles down it’ll prevent water weakening the glue holding the brushes together. Plus they will be super handy for travel. I tried them on my brushes and was surprised how much they stretched! The biggest one looks tiny, but expanded to fit my giant bronzer brush.

Brush

BB5 Foldable Brush Compact – ($2?)

So cute!

The compact open – so cute!

Last but not least, BB5 sent a brush compact as a gift in hour of their first anniversary. This is super cute, I love the colour and it’s definitely going into my purse – so practical. My only gripe is that mine came with the mirror detached from the compact :( It’s nothing a little glue can’t fix though. Actually, gripe #2, I don’t think that a gift in honour of their birthday should be considered the fifth sample – this should have been an extra bonus for it to count as a gift.

ALSO! Not pictured but there was also a $50 gift card, no strings attached, included in the boxes to iTrain.com, which is kind of cool. I used it earlier and downloaded a bunch of mp3 workout programs to listen to when I run outside or to listen to and guide me when I’m at the gym.

Beauty Box 5 February Anniversary Box

Well there you have it! This was BB5’s February anniversary box, with a total value of $15.47. Not a super high value, but I’m happy because everything in this will definitely be used and because with my yearly sub, I only pay about $8 a box.

If you’re interested in signing up (go for the yearly sub if you do!) you can do so by going to their website here.

What did you think about this month’s box?

ClubNailPolish Review

So today I came home to a mysterious silver bubble mailer package addressed to me with no return address on it…

?? Who could this be from?

The suspense was killing me! Who was this mystery package from?

Tada! The goodies inside! Cotton pads x 3, OPI You Don’t Know Jacques (full size), and nail files x 3

It was my Pretty Little Package from ClubNailPolish.com! This is their prototype for their monthly package, which they sent to me for review. ClubNailPolish.com is a new service and is a nail polish of the month club. It’s not meant to be like a beauty box type subscription, but something simpler, where they only send a full size bottle of a secret colour of brand name nail polish each month and you can cancel any time. Right now they’re only available in Canada, but the next step will be the US.

Their description of their service is

It’s like “Candy For Your Nails.” And as someone famous once said. “Life is like a box full of chocolates. You never know what one you’ll get” In this case, once a month. We are the last chocolate that you relish and savor.

I was so happy to get this in the mail! I love the sparkly silver envelope, such a happy surprise to be getting (rather than just bills and junk mail :p). My goodies were wrapped up in matching silver printed tissue paper too, which was a really cute touch. I’m actually really happy to be receiving this colour as well, so great choice on them! OPI’s You Don’t Know Jacques is one of those colours that seem ubiquitous, but I never got around to picking one up for myself. I remember it launching quite a few years ago, but since then it’s become one of the permanent colours. It’s a dark purpley greyish brown taupe, which doesn’t sound overly pretty, but if you google some swatches looks gorgeous on nails! I can’t wait to try this out. The cotton pads and nail files will certainly come in handy when I remove my current polish and reshape my nails to try this one out ;)

I think the idea behind ClubNailPolish is really cool being a “nail polish of the month club” where they send you the secret colour of the month from a name brand (ie. OPI, China Glaze, Essie, etc) rather than a big box of random beauty samples or inhouse products. Nice and simple. It’s perfect for nail polish junkies who just want a surprise polish each month without all the other products that come in existing beauty box services.

However, I really question the sustainability of the service. The bubble mailer shows that shipping cost $7.61 for the package – yikes! That’s just about how much each nail polish itself costs at retail price. Hopefully they can negotiate a cheaper shipping rate. I don’t think they’ve established a price for their monthly Pretty Little Packages yet, but it would have to be at least around $10 for them to just break even and at that price, unless they throw in some fun extras like maybe glitter pots or nail stickers (cotton pads and nail files are a useful addition, but I can’t imagine that people would want to be receiving them every month) I don’t think many people would be interested because you can pick up a polish from a salon or drugstore for around the same price.

That said, they haven’t launched yet and are just testing out their prototype package right now. I’m sure there’s lot’s of room for improvement and as a self professed nail polish junkie (and lover of all surprises – especially ones in pretty packages) I’m super excited for this to launch!
